UNITED READY TO ACTIVATE RELEASE CLAUSE

Premier League giants Manchester United are ready to activate the release clause in the contract of Villarreal defender Pau Torres. This was revealed by Spanish journalist Javi Mata. The media personnel also stated thatManchester United have met with the representatives of the player who has £50m as the release clause in his Villarreal contract.

Manchester United have made the signing of a new centre back top priority this summer. The club wants to sign a new centre back partner for club skipper Harry Maguire. The other centre back options at the club have been inconsistent and this has forced Manchester United officials into the market.

Victor Lindelof has been the centre back partner for Maguire for the majority of the season but the Swedish international has been inconsistent. Ivorian player Eric Bailly is another centre back option that has suffered from inconsistent displays plus several injury issues. Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are the remaining centre backs at the club.

England international Phil Jones has not played for Manchester United since January 2020 due to injury while young defender Tuanzebe has shown promise like he did with a man-of-the-match performance in the 2-1 win at French giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in the Champions League group stage earlier this season but manager Solskjaer doesn’t think he can trust him over a long period of time.

Manchester United have the opportunity to take a closer look at the aforementioned Pau Torres when they take on his Villarreal side in the Europa League final next week. Apart from the Spanish international, the other centre back targets being considered by the Red Devils include Real Madrid player Raphael Varane and Sevilla star Jules Kounde.
